On October 19th, the Korea Society hosted their Annual Dinner at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Kathleen Stephens, Korea Society Board Chair Ambassador, and Thomas J. Byrne, Korea Society President and CEO, welcomed guests. At the event, LG and General Motors were honored with the Van Fleet Award for the value of their partnership to simultaneously enrich the relationship between the U.S. and Korea and further sustainability goals.

After a tribute to the late former Secretary of State General Colin L. Powell, Special Remarks were given by former Secretary of State Madeline Albright and EFI CEO and Founder Ernest Moniz. Albright highlighted the fruit of rich U.S.-Korea relations and emphasized the need to continue nourishing this relationship, a product of strong efforts by organizations like The Korea Society.

Moniz spoke to Powell’s leadership and extended congratulations to the Korea Society for deepening the relationship between the U.S. and Korea and to LG and General Motors for representing this relationship as they spearheaded the clean energy transition. Moniz expanded on the shared values between the U.S. and Korea on sustainability and decarbonization, emphasizing the need for electricity decarbonization as it unlocks the capacity to sustainably electrify other sectors, like the work of LG and General Motors. In doing so, Moniz underscored the importance of building domestic supply chains. He concluded by thanking The Korea Society for recognizing the efforts of LG and General Motors as well as for promoting U.S.-Korea relations.

The event proceeded with a keynote address by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman, who commemorated the shared security, economic, and cultural values of the United States and Korea. A musical performance by Ruthie Ann Miles culturally enriched the event as she performed a variety of songs, including renditions of Korean folk songs.
